Great start to the new school year, Open Evening success and upcoming events…
The new academic year has started really positively at Queensbury as we begin our sixth year. It certainly feels busier than ever before as we currently have 229 new Year 7 students and a total of 1160 students on roll. Our new Year 7 have made a very impressive start to their life at Queensbury. Their outstanding behaviour, impeccable manners and general work ethic are a great testament to their primary schools (and you, the parents, of course!). At the other end of the age range, our new Sixth Form students appear to be settling well into life in our Sixth Form and adjusting to the increased demands of their A-level subjects. As a school we are having a big push on Sixth Formers using the time when they are not in lessons (“Private Study” time rather than “Free lessons”) as productively as possible and so far they seem to be responding well to the challenge.
Team GB call up for talented Queensbury gymnast
Massive congratulations go to Robert Missen in Year 8 who has been selected to represent Great Britain in Gymnastics at the 2017 Loulé Cup which takes place from 4th until 8th October. Good luck Robert: we wish you every success.
Cycling and safety on site
Can I please ask all parents to support us with two matters relating to the safety of our students and all members of our community. Firstly, we still receive regular complaints about some of our students cycling in an unsafe and inconsiderate manner on the way to and from the Academy. In serious cases, when members of the public have been able to identify the culprits, we have banned them from cycling to the Academy for a fixed period (with a view to a permanent ban for repeat offenders). If your son/daughter cycles to school could you please emphasise the importance of doing so in a safe manner and of the need to be aware of, and courteous to, other road users and pedestrians. Secondly, for parents bringing their cars onto the school site, please drive slowly and be aware that there are often large numbers of young people moving around in a relatively small space. Thank you in advance for your support with both of these matters.
Open Evening success
On Thursday evening, we held our Open Evening for prospective parents for next year’s Year 7 intake. It was great to see so many people: I think this was the biggest turnout since we began as Queensbury Academy with over six hundred parents visiting us, so hopefully we will continue to be oversubscribed next year, as we are currently. A big thank you to all the staff and students who volunteered to help out and make the evening such a success. I would like to thank our Head Girl (Aliza Rizvi), Head Boy (Cameron Summers) and our two Year 7 speakers (Annabel Enifeni and Jack Galligan) for their excellent speeches that were all delivered in a confident and professional manner.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to some upcoming events:
Wednesday 4th October: Key Stage 3 Curriculum Information Evening for all Parents of Year 7 students. Starts at 6:30pm in the West Hall
Thursday 12th October: Key Stage 4 Curriculum Information Evening. Parents of Year 9 students: 6:00pm. Parents of Year 10 students: 7:00pm both in the West Hall.
Tuesday 17th October: Year 7 Settling In Evening from 3.30 to 5 pm in the West Hall.
Please note, that our Trust has designated an extra Staff Training day on Friday 10th November, which means the Academy will be closed to students on this day. Apologies for any inconvenience this arrangement may cause.
Have a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.
