A Brief History of Warrensburg

Warrensburg’s story dates back to 1786, when William Bond became the first known settler, establishing his home near what is now Echo Lake (home to today’s Camp Echo Lake). The community was officially established as Warrensburgh on February 12, 1813, and quickly grew into a bustling, water-powered industrial center with sawmills, tanneries, and other businesses fueled by the nearby rivers.

Originally known as “The Bridge” - possibly in reference to one of the first crossings over the Schroon River - the town became an important connection point for travelers heading deeper into the Adirondacks.

In 1894, the “h” was officially dropped from Warrensburgh when the U.S. Post Office ordered that towns ending in “burgh” simplify their names unless they chose otherwise. The farmers market and a few local traditions still keep the old spelling alive today.
