Comparable to that of a major metropolitan museum, the core collection, acquired by Museum founders Louis and Charlotte Hyde, includes works by such artists as Sandro Botticelli, El Greco, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Edgar Degas, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and American artists Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, and James McNeill Whistler. The Museum’s collection of Modern and Contemporary art features works by artists including Josef Albers, Dorothy Dehner, Sam Gilliam, Adolph Gottlieb, Grace Hartigan, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, George McNeil, Robert Motherwell, Ben Nicholson, Robert Rauschenberg, and Bridget Riley.

Today, The Hyde offers significant national and international exhibitions, and a packed schedule of events that help visitors to experience art in new ways.

The Museum is located six blocks down on the right, just past the Armory.

PARKING:  Parking is available on both sides of the Museum complex, as well as along Warren Street. Look for “Parking” signage on the west side in front of Hoopes House, along Warren Street, and at the entrance to the east lot. Spaces for handicapped and special needs parking are located in the smaller parking area in front of Hyde House.

VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES:  The entire complex is accessible by wheelchair with two exceptions: the guest bedroom downstairs and Mrs. Hyde’s bedroom upstairs. Service animals are welcome in the Museum, but they must wear a service identification jacket or vest. Thank you.

History of The Hyde Collection

The Hyde Collection is home to a world-class collection that spans the history of western art from the 4th century BC through the 20th century. The museum's founders, Louis and Charlotte Hyde, acquired the majority of objects during a fifty-year period of avid and highly informed collecting. Many of these works are displayed in their home, known as Hyde House, as well as in galleries in the education wing.

When the Hydes began collecting, their focus was not unlike that of their contemporaries. They acquired Old Master paintings, drawings and sculptures by artists such as Botticelli, El Greco, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens.

After the death of her husband in 1934, Mrs. Hyde continued to acquire new works. In fact, approximately two-thirds of the core collection reflect her personal decisions and taste. It was also during this time that she decided to broaden the scope of the collection.

To that end, she proceeded to purchase additional works by such modern masters as Cezanne, Degas, Picasso, Renoir, Seurat, and van Gogh. Concurrently, she assembled a significant group of works by important American artists including Eakins, Hassam, Homer, Peto, and Ryder.

While the majority of the objects comprising the permanent collection were the result of the efforts of Louis and Charlotte Hyde, the collection continues to grow through donations and acquisitions over the years.
